MAGNESIUM: A MINERAL WITH BROAD-RANGING BENEFITS

Despite magnesium’s importance to human health, many Americans don’t consume the FDA recommendation of 420 mg daily.

Magnesium Bisglycinate Thorne Research Benefits

Lightly sweetened with Monk Fruit, with a hint of citrus, optimally absorbed, and well-tolerated*

  • Glycine enhances solubility and absorption of magnesium bisglycinate by decreasing the pH of the intestines.*
  • Glycine takes up space on the magnesium bisglycinate molecule, decreasing propensity to complex with plant-based phytates that can interfere with absorption.*
  • The molecular structure of magnesium bisglycinate means less water will attach to the complex, which reduces the laxative effect typically seen in magnesium compounds.*

Thorne Research’s Magnesium Bisglycinate provides 200 mg of elemental magnesium per scoop. It is lightly sweetened, fully reacted, and easily dissolves in water or other liquids to make a pleasant tasting liquid with a hint of citrus.

WHY MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE THORNE RESEARCH?

Mineral absorption is dependent on how soluble the mineral is, and in turn, the mineral’s solubility is determined by the pH of its environment – the lower the pH, the more soluble the mineral. Glycine, the amino acid in magnesium bisglycinate, helps to decrease the pH in the small intestine, which improves the solubility and absorbability of Magnesium Bisglycinate.WHAT IS MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE?

* Other advantages of Magnesium Bisglycinate include:

• Two glycine molecules occupy active sites on magnesium, which reduces magnesium’s tendency to complex with phytates and other plant-based substances that inhibit absorption.*

• Because glycine takes up active sites on the molecule, less water attaches to the molecule, which reduces the laxative effect typically seen in magnesium compounds.*

• A study found that serum levels of magnesium over eight hours were highest for magnesium bisglycinate, followed in order by dimagnesium malate, buffered magnesium bisglycinate, and magnesium oxide.* [unpublished study from Albion Laboratories]

MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE THORNE RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

A crossover study found that serum levels of magnesium over eight hours were highest for magnesium bisglycinate, followed in order by dimagnesium malate, buffered magnesium bisglycinate, and magnesium oxide.*

Magnesium is essential for the health of the heart and blood vessels, brain, bones, skeletal muscles, lungs, and pancreas.*  A low level of magnesium is associated with an increased level of C-reactive protein.* As a cofactor for at least 600 enzymes, magnesium supports numerous mechanisms of action, including:

  • Relieves bronchial spasm*WHAT IS MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE?
  • Modulates intracellular electrical activity*
  • Relaxes smooth and skeletal muscle*
  • Improves endothelial-dependent vasodilation*
  • Enhances insulin sensitivity*
  • Cofactor in numerous enzymes necessary for ATP (energy) production*

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE?

Magnesium bisglycinate is an essential mineral needed for more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. This mineral is required for the formation of healthy bones and teeth, protein and fatty acid formation, activating B vitamins, supporting muscle activity, nerve transmission, relaxing blood vessels, clotting blood, temperature regulation and ensuring intestinal mobility also called bowel movements.

Magnesium bisglycinate is magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. This binding makes the magnesium highly absorbable. For example you would have to take 4 times the amount of magnesium citrate to get the equivalent amount of magnesium bisglycinate. The bisglycinate form of magnesium does not require stomach acid for absorption as it passes into the cell via its amino acid transport which means even those with poor digestion or absorption get the benefits. Magnesium bisglycinate is the only magnesium shown to cross the blood brain barrier which makes it an excellent choice for aiding those with depression and/or anxiety, or migraine headaches. WHAT IS MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE?

Stress of all types including chemical, emotional, hormonal or physical stress depletes magnesium from the body. Since magnesium relaxes muscles and nerves, more magnesium is needed when you are under stress. When we are under stress our adrenal glands produce cortisol which further increases acidity in the body thereby increasing the need for even more magnesium.

Because magnesium is required in the metabolism of estrogen in the body, low levels of magnesium increases estrogen leading to estrogen dominance. Symptoms of too much estrogen include premenstrual breast and uterine pain, headaches, backaches, premenstrual depression and mood swings. Women on the birth control pill or hormone replacement therapy also become deficient in magnesium as the drugs deplete magnesium. Anyone with an estrogen dominant condition like endometriosis, PMS, fibroids, ovarian cysts, period problems or breast cysts need magnesium bisglycinate. Interestingly, many women crave chocolate during their premenstrual and menstrual period. Chocolate is high in magnesium!

Magnesium deficiency is common due to our consumption of processed foods and the depletion of magnesium from agricultural soils and water.
