You see, without realizing it, we’ve been “starving” our eyes for decades.
Part of the problem is that our food just doesn’t have the nutrients it used to. Commercial farming and the giant “Big Agra” corporations killed off all the small farms along with the time-honored practices that kept our produce “real.”

Here’s the Little-Known Secret to Protecting Your Vision
Here’s the very first thing I tell my patients… central vision is the key to your survival and independence.
Central vision is your field of vision when you’re looking straight ahead. It’s essential for driving, reading, watching TV and is the most commonly used part of human vision. Central vision also helps you see details, colors and shapes with clarity.
All the action for central vision takes place in a spot on the retina called the macula. Now you’ve probably heard about that before. It’s talked about a lot because it’s one of the first areas to weaken as you age.
The word macula means “yellow spot,” in Latin. And that’s what it is… a concentrated yellow spot on your retina.
That yellow color means your macula has a high concentration of carotenoids, the nutrients that give food their bright colors. (Like carrots or tomatoes, for example.) And the two main carotenoids in your macula are lutein and zeaxanthin.
So it’s probably not a surprise to hear that a lack of these carotenoids will slowly starve your macula.
And when your eyes starve… bad things happen.

In the pictures on the left, the blurry, black spots show you what it’s like to have weak, obscured central vision.
As your macula starts to age and wear out, your central vision suffers.
Now imagine seeing a big, black spot right in front of you every moment of your waking life… wherever you look, there it is.
This giant, black distortion blocks out the TV show you’re trying watch, the book you’re trying to read, your spouse, your kids, your grandkids… all BLACKED OUT.
And forget trying to drive. If your macula has problems, your driver’s license can get revoked (or denied when it’s time to renew) mighty fast.
Remember: any number of these blockages or “blind spots” can appear when your macula isn’t getting the nutrients it needs.
Sadly, Eating a “Healthy Diet” Just
Isn’t Good Enough Anymore…
Here’s a question I hear all the time: “But Dr. Blyweiss, why do I need supplements for my eyes? I eat a healthy diet. I exercise. I’m good to my body…”
As you already discovered, your food just doesn’t pack the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need to stay fit and active. And it certainly does NOT have enough of the carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin you need to see like clear, sharp images… or drive at night.
Here’s the problem: Your best sources of these two eyesight essentials come from dark, leafy greens like kale, broccoli, collard greens, peas and Brussels sprouts. And those are the very same foods Uncle Sam warned us were losing their nutrients.
To make matters worse, lutein and zeaxanthin start to disappear when you smoke or drink. Now, I don’t know if you’re a smoker, but most of us have a drink every now and then.
So all in all, you’re really facing a SEVERE shortage of these macula-supporting nutrients. And if you smoke or drink, your reserves will most likely be stuck on “empty.”
I’m not the only one saying this either. There’s a mountain of evidence that supports using lutein and zeaxanthin to improve your eyesight.
But before I show that to you, there are a couple of things I want you to know. These are critical pieces of the puzzle.
- For lutein and zeaxanthin to work, you MUST get them from a natural, organic source. That means the chemical or synthetic versions will NOT help you. And you’d be sick and heartbroken to find out just how many manufacturers will stick you with the cheap, “fake” versions of these must-have nutrients.
- Second, you need to make sure the dose is HIGH enough to do any good. Again, this is where big companies will short change you. These nutrients are not cheap, and those big manufacturers are very concerned with cost.
- Third, lutein and zeaxanthin are just two of the nutrients you need for focused, sharp, see-at-any-distance vision. There are 14 more.
More on that in a minute.
First, let me show you some PROOF. These are just some of the studies that show you just how well these two nutrients can sharpen your vision and change the way you see the world.
Harvard Medical School Discovers the
Secret to Youthful, Razor-Sharp Vision…
Harvard researcher Dr. Max Snodderly, Ph.D., head of the laboratory at The Schepens Eye Research Institute gives you reason for NEW hope:
“Perhaps the gradual loss of vision in many older people is not an inevitable consequence of the aging process…”
One of the biggest and most credible studies on the macula and its connection to young, sharp eyesight is called the “Schepens study.”
The Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston is the single largest independent eye research institute in the U.S. and is affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
Using a special, non-invasive test, researchers measured the “macular pigment density” in volunteers as young as 24 and as old as 84. And at this point, it probably won’t surprise you to discover that these Ivy-league researchers found that…
People age 60 and over with higher macular pigment density had the same “visual efficiency” as the younger volunteers who were still in their 20s!
“Visual efficiency” is a fancy way of saying that the old timers with a healthy macula pigment had eyesight that was just as sharp as the youngsters.
Now remember, your macular pigment is incredibly powerful, because it blocks out damaging light rays as well as free radical damage to the retina. That’s why it’s linked to sharp, healthy vision.
Here’s something else: the Harvard doctors found that macular pigment density was also linked to the health and clarity of your lens, too. That’s important because if your lenses get cloudy, your vision will breakdown… just in a different way.
87% of People Had BETTER Vision in as Little as 3 Months
In another study, 15 volunteers with vision concerns took a natural source of lutein and zeaxanthin four to seven days each week.
Researchers reported visual improvements in as little as 3 months!
And get this… “Distortions” and other issues were either partially or completely cleared up in 87% of the people tested.
So here’s the takeaway message from that study: Having an 87% success rate on a tightly controlled study is “off the charts” good. It’s incredibly rare to see that.
And these results have been repeated again and again… while at the same time being acknowledged by VERY conservative publications like the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
The folks at JAMA usually have a strong distaste for anything that sounds like a natural cure. Yet even by their own accounting, lutein and zeaxanthin are knock ’em out of the park home runs.

Zeaxanthin for Healthy Vision
World’s Leading Medical Journal Announces Breakthrough Study:
An overwhelming 87% of people consuming lutein and zeaxanthin for just 12 weeks experienced either a partial or complete REVERSAL of their vision concerns.
There it was in black and white, starting on page 1413 of the November 9th issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.
When researchers compiled study results from five major eye care centers across the country, those with the highest levels of these nutrients in their diet had a 43% lower risk of macula damage than those with the lowest.
Clearly, these macula-boosting nutrients are the real deal. They WORK.
But here’s the ugly truth: Sometimes the manufacturers of nutritional supplements will sell you cheap ingredients that don’t work… even when they promise you the world.
Remember I mentioned these nutrients are a tad on the expensive side?
Well, a lot of these jokers will try and “wow” you with success stories and impressive studies (like the ones above) and then give you the old switch-a-roo in the formula they sell you.
And that’s a problem. Because how are you supposed to know the difference?
But that’s not the only trap you need to watch out for…
The Dose You Take Is Just as Important
Take lutein for example. Most brands give you anywhere from 2mg to 6mg in their formula. Some even LESS. It’s simple greed. The less they spend on the ingredients, the more money they put in their pocket.
For starters, 6 milligrams is the bare minimum. And yes, there are studies that show 6mg will help you… but if you get stuck with a formula that has just 2mg, you’re only getting about one third of what you need.
And keep in mind that the studies using 6mg of lutein are OLD. I’m talking 20 to 25 years old. We’ve come a long way since then.
More recent studies, like the Department of Veterans’ Affairs study called the Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST) from 2004 shows that 10mg of lutein is needed to improve your vision.
The numbers aren’t big numbers, so it’s easy to skip over them. But the difference between 6mg and 10mg is over 60%. And that is a HUGE difference.
So clearly, those few milligrams in each dose make a dramatic difference in supplying your eyes with the nourishment they need.
But that’s not the most troubling part of this equation. More important than how much you’re taking is… how much you’re absorbing. That’s where you run into even more trouble.
If You Don’t Fully Absorb the Nutrients
Your Body CAN’T USE THEM
Lutein, zeaxanthin and most of the other nutrients that help your eyes are often degraded and diluted when they get into your system.
Most of the “experts” don’t realize that when lutein gets into your blood stream, there are more than a dozen factors that can “zap” the lutein, making it nearly impossible for your body to use.
Get this: If you’re over 50, you’ll have a harder time absorbing and using these nutrients. If you’re overweight, it’s even harder… if you smoke or drink (even a little) it’s even worse.
And if your liver and kidneys are not working at 100%, which most peoples are not, you’re looking at even more trouble.

Read the Labels!
As with any prepared food you buy, read the labels on supplements to be sure you’re getting what you want. Here are some tips:
- Be sure the product you buy is fresh: Check expiration dates.

- Look for a reputable manufacturer as quality can vary widely.
- If you’re prone to stomach upset, capsules may be a better choice than tablets, which are harder for your system to absorb.

- Avoid supplements containing fillers, ingredients used to bulk up products so they “look like more.” These include wheat, corn, and dairy products, which could cause digestive or allergic problems.
- If fish oil is listed as a source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, the label should state that it has been produced in a manner that eliminates contaminants, particularly mercury.
- The FDA does regulate dietary supplements, but treats them like food rather than medications; unlike drug manufacturers, the makers of supplements don’t have to show their products are safe or effective before selling them. The FDA can get a supplement removed from the market, though. And supplement manufacturers must maintain certain standards (called GMP) that are similar to those for pharmaceutical makers.
