Prostate trouble is almost unavoidable. As I’ve mentioned before, 9 out of 10 men will eventually have prostate issues. And the sooner you take steps to cut your risk, the better. That’s why you should know about these 3 nutrients that can help you knock out prostate problems naturally.
Zinc is probably the most famous prostate booster. There’s plenty of truth in the old stories about eating oysters for male sexual performance. Oysters are loaded with zinc.
In 2011, Doctors in India compared zinc levels in men with and without prostate trouble. They found men with prostate problems had 61% – 83% lower levels of zinc than men with healthy prostates.1
Getting enough zinc in your diet can be a challenge. Zinc levels are extremely high in oysters… but they’re expensive. Plus, many men have a bad reaction to oysters. And not everyone appreciates the taste.
Sesame and pumpkin seeds are also good sources of zinc. But you get a lot of fat along with the zinc. That’s why a nutritional supplement with pumpkin seed extract may be your best bet for getting plenty of this key mineral.
Omega-3 fatty acids are also linked to prostate health. But not all Omega-3s promote prostate health.
The Omega-3 with the biggest positive impact on your prostate is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). This is an Omega-3 you can’t get from eating fish. The richest natural source is flax seed.
Scientists in China compared several Omega-3s, and ALA came out way on top when it came to promoting prostate health. They found EPA and DHA – the two Omega-3s in fish oil – might raise prostate risk very slightly.
When they looked at ALA, they found men with higher ALA levels had a lower risk of prostate problems. And the link was linear… which means the higher the ALA levels, the lower the risk.2
Getting your ALA from flax seed can be a challenge. Flaxseed oil goes rancid very quickly. So grinding fresh flax seed is the best way to ensure your getting plenty of ALA. But that’s not practical for most people.
Fortunately, pumpkin seeds also contain a fair amount of ALA. Since they also contain a good amount of zinc, pumpkin seed extract is doubly effective for prostate health.
Our third prostate nutrient is lycopene.
In 2008, German researchers tested lycopene on a group of men with enlarged prostate glands. They gave some of the men lycopene for 6 months. The rest took a placebo. At the end of the study, the prostates of the men taking the placebo had grown larger. Those of the lycopene group hadn’t.3
Tomatoes are the most common source of lycopene. If the high acidity of tomatoes others your stomach, lycopene is also available as a nutritional supplement. For maximum prostate support, look for a prostate formula with at last two of these three nutrients.
